Travel photography contributions – week 10 (14 – 21 August 2012)

We’ve been quiet for a short while, as since we came back from our two month hitch-hiking trip around the Iberian Peninsula we’ve been dealing with ‘post-travelling stress disorder’, looking for jobs, finding a new house and patiently waiting to readjust to the reality kicking back at us… In essence, once again we got convinced that travelling is so much better than real life ;)

But we haven’t forgotten about our Travel Photography competition and all this time we’ve been receiving hundreds of stunning photos, taken in various parts of the world, which we’d like to share with you.

The first winning image was taken from Mount Kithaironas, Attiki, Greece. With an elevation of 1,409 m, it’s the highest point of Kithairon, the mostly limestone mountain range located in central Greece. The range was the scene of many events in Greek mythology and was especially sacred to Dionysus. Nowadays, as it’s very windy up there, the mountain is popular among extreme sports buffs, who choose it as a perfect place for paragliding and base jumping.

This great shot was taken by our regular contributor Vagelis Pikoulas, who also won our Travel Photography Contributions – week 7. Vagelis is a Greek photographer specialising mostly in picturesque and dreamlike seaside shots. Although he doesn’t have a Facebook page, we highly recommend subscribing to his Facebook profile for more stunning shots.

The second photo among this week’s winners was taken in Schwarzwald, Germany, which is a wooded mountain range in Baden-Württemberg, in southwestern Germany. The name, being German for “Black Forest“, comes from the Romans who referred to the thickly forested mountains which obscure the light inside. The highest peak in this range is Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 m.

We’ve never been to this part of Germany but this photo really makes us want to go there! It was taken by Ella H. Photography, who won our previous Travel Photography Contributions – week 9 with her great road shot from Scotland. Ella also specialises in city and wedding photography. Visit her Flickr photostream for more details.

And the third and last (but never least) photo this week shows stunning colours in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. Kodaikanal is a city witha population of 33,000 people, which name in the Tamil language means “The Gift of the Forest”. The town sits on a plateau at 2,133 m with meadows and grasslands covering the hillsides.

We are planning to hitch-hike to India next year and this photo is a great recommendation.

This beautiful shot was taken by Ram Kumar, who apart from being a part-time photographer is also an engineer. Visit his Facebook page for more photos.

Massive thanks for everyone who participated, by sending and voting for the photos. We really appreciate your interest and we hope to hear from you again! Your shots are a great inspiration, not only for us but also for everyone who follows and visits our blog. Keep up the great work you’re doing!

What are Travel Photography Contribution Weeks?

Each week we publish the three pictures which got the most “likes” on our Facebook page giving the photographers the credit they deserve. The competition has a 3-4 week delay so that the pictures sent later in a week will have an equal chance to get the same amount of “likes” as the ones sent at the beginning.

Visit our Travel Photography page to see all the previous winning photos!

If your pictures are among this week’s selection, feel free to link to our website and tell your friends about it.

If you would like to participate in the selections, post your best TRAVEL shots on our Facebook page with their location clearly indicated.

Keep sending your photos and travel safe!
